In his interview today before a match, Maradona says: “Messi’s a great player, but not a leader. It’s difficult to say it but it’s useless to make a leader out of a man who goes to the bathroom 20 times before a game . Let’s stop making a God out of him. He’s just another player. The best in the world with Cristiano.”
Messi is the current captain of the Argentine national team who led the country to the world cup final in 2014 in Brazil where they lost to Germany on penalty.
Maradona goes on to add: “Before talking to the Coach and players, Messi will play on the PlayStation. Then, on the field, he wants to be the leader. We have to take the leadership away from Messi for him to be the Messi we want him to be.” That was according to the Argentine legend.
Fans Reaction to the Comment
As was expected, Lionel Messi fans are currently ripping him apart on social media for the comment. The comment did not go down well with many fans who accused Maradona of drunkenness and drug addiction. With others calling him inconsistent and arrogant.
However, some of the fans tend to agree with Maradona’s assertion. “Not everyone can be a leader Messi had never fit the profile. I agree, let him be Messi without the leader role” says a Messi fan on Twitter.
Another fan says “Maradona slams Messi as I had never heard before on Fox Sports Mexico” as the comment was made during an interview with Fox Sports Mexico, shortly before a match.
What’s your own opinion? Was Maradona right over his remark on Lionel Messi or was the comment out of jealousy, as some people are accusing him?
Let’s have your say. Do you believe Maradona was right for criticizing Lionel Messi? Is Messi really fulfilling his role as the Argentina national team captain?
